“Happy Birthday” translates to “Hau`oli Lā Hānau” in Hawaiian. “Hau`oli” means “Happy, glad, gay, joyful,” “Lā” means “Day, date” (as well as “sun, sunny”), and “Hānau” means “To give birth; to lay (an egg); born.”
Note that the first “a” in both “Lā” and “Hānau” include the kahakō, or a macron, a Hawaiian diacritical mark indicating a long vowel sound.
On August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state to join the United States of America. Hawaii’s journey to becoming a state had started five months prior when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Hawaii Admission Act on March 18, 1959.

This cover is from a brochure compiled by the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii that outlines student support for Hawaiian statehood. It features reasons for statehood from students, staff, and a number of American public figures. It was included as part of a statehood petition sent by University of Hawaii students to Representative Hugh Peterson (D-GA), then chairman of the House Committee on Territories.
The brochure is titled “Hawaii: 49th State” because Alaska had not yet entered the union.

History of Happy Cakes

Celebrating almost fifty years, Hawaiian Happy Cakes™ have delighted in bringing authentic Hawaiian hospitality to all corners of the world. By combining local macadamia nuts from Hawaii’s Big Island, delicious sweet pineapple, fresh coconut and the finest of baking ingredients, Hawaii’s most famous cake tantalizes taste buds with true Hawaiian flavor.

The Hawaiian Happy Cake story is an important part of Oahu culinary culture. Founder Dick Rodby grew up in Wahiawa surrounded by pineapple plantations where his family established a family restaurant across from Schofield Barracks. ‘Kemoo Farms’ became legendary over the years for its great food and local entertainers such as Charles K. Davis.

In 1967 the Rodby family served the first Happy Cake and soon after order began coming in from all over the country. Throughout the United States people began order Happy Cakes from Kemoo Farms and they have been going strong ever since. Nine years ago, Owen O’Callaghan joined the organization and the business began to develop in new directions.

Now celebrating its forty-sixth birthday, the Hawaiian Happy Cakes™ continues to respect Dick Rodby’s tradition of using only the finest local ingredients. Today, the cakes are the only authentic Hawaiian pineapple and macadamia cake on the market, and are still carefully crafted and hand baked.

The Happy Cake continues to be shared as a unique Hawaiian gift that brings ‘Aloha’ to those who enjoy it.

Locals still love sending it to family and friends on the mainland, especially for the holidays! Our friends on the mainland enjoy ordering it because it makes them feel like they are back here in the islands while they are eating it. Many a honeymoon is remembered and rekindled over a Happy Cake.
